Panic as Gunshots and Canisters Disrupt Osun Election Collation Centre
Panic broke out at the Ataoja D Ward 4 election collation centre in Osogbo, Osun State, on Saturday night after gunshots were fired and canisters were released within the premises. The incident happened between about 9:15 p.m. and 9:30 p.m. at Union Baptist Primary School while governorship election results were being collated. Eyewitnesses said the gunfire, reportedly fired into the air by security personnel, lasted for more than 15 minutes and forced people nearby to flee for safety. The cause of the shooting and whether anyone was injured were not immediately clear. The disruption came as results were being collated across Osun's 30 local government areas, raising fresh concerns about security and possible interference in the process. Governor Ademola Adeleke had earlier called on President Bola Tinubu, the Federal Government and security agencies to protect the collation process and allow INEC officials to conclude their work without disruption.
