Osun Governorship Election: Key Facts as Adeleke, Oyebamiji and Salaam Contest

Osun voters are expected to head to the polls on Saturday, August 15, to choose a governor for the 2026–2030 term. INEC says more than 2.3 million registered voters will vote across 3,763 polling units in the state’s 30 local government areas. The contest is expected to centre on incumbent Governor Ademola Adeleke of the Accord Party, APC candidate Bola Oyebamiji and ADC candidate Najeem Salaam. Although 14 parties are fielding candidates, the three leading contenders have strong political structures and influential backers. INEC plans to deploy 5,130 BVAS machines, with 1,328 backup devices, while security agencies have identified flashpoints and pledged to protect voters, officials and election materials. The poll will also test provisions on electronic result transmission and candidate nomination under the Electoral Act. Osun has held off-cycle governorship elections since a court ruling overturned the outcome of the 2007 poll and installed Rauf Aregbesola after years of litigation. The coming election is expected to be another fiercely contested chapter in the state’s political history.
