Iran Threatens Retaliation After Alleged Ukrainian Strike on Caspian Sea Vessel

Iran has warned Ukraine of possible retaliation after Tehran accused Kyiv of striking an Iranian commercial vessel in the Caspian Sea. Iranian officials said the alleged attack killed one sailor and injured another. Ebrahim Azizi, who heads the Iranian Parliament’s National Security Commission, said Iran would not leave the incident unanswered. Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi also blamed President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and described the attack as one that could bring consequences. Ukraine has acknowledged targeting vessels in the Caspian Sea which it says were linked to military cargo. Zelenskyy said Iran has supported Russia’s war against Ukraine by supplying drones, weapons and military technology to Moscow from the early stages of the conflict. The claims and counterclaims come amid heightened regional tensions, with Iran and Ukraine presenting sharply different accounts of the vessel’s role and the justification for the strike.
