Former Bankers Defend UBA Recruit Who Called Tony Elumelu by His First Name
Former Nigerian bank employees have defended a UBA recruit who addressed the bank’s chairman, Tony Elumelu, simply as “Tony” during the induction of 5,000 new staff members. Elumelu corrected her publicly, saying he preferred that she use a respectful prefix rather than follow what he called an “Oyinbo” culture. The moment sparked criticism online, with some people accusing the recruit of being disrespectful. However, former staff of Access Bank and Diamond Bank said first-name culture is common in corporate banking. They recalled being trained to address colleagues and senior executives by their first names, sometimes facing sanctions for using titles such as “sir” or “Mr.” Others argued that the recruit likely acted based on her induction training, while noting that new employees should also be taught how to adapt to different leaders’ personal preferences.
