Wisdom-Teeth Pain in Your Twenties: When to See a Dentist
Wisdom teeth often emerge in the late teens or twenties. If there is not enough room in the jaw, they may come through at an angle or only partly emerge, causing pain, swelling and difficulty chewing. A partly erupted tooth can trap food and bacteria beneath the gum. This may lead to soreness, infection or an unpleasant taste. However, pain at the back of the mouth can also come from tooth decay or another dental problem, so a dentist should assess it. Wisdom teeth do not always need to be removed. A dentist may recommend monitoring a healthy tooth that can be cleaned properly, while repeated infections or damage to nearby teeth may require treatment. Seek prompt care for worsening swelling, fever or difficulty opening your mouth. Get emergency help if swelling affects breathing or swallowing.
