Court Orders Stepfather to Pay R40,000 Monthly for Teen Stepchildren
A South African businessman must continue paying R40,000 a month in maintenance for his two teenage stepchildren. He also covers their medical aid and pays R35,000 monthly towards his ex-wife’s rent while the divorce proceeds. The couple married in April 2018 out of community of property and separated in late 2023. The wife, a dietician, argued that her children had grown used to a higher standard of living and suffered distress when financial support stopped. Evidence included a message from the husband to his employees promising to maintain love, time and education for “our kids.” The wife’s lawyers said this showed he assumed parental responsibility. The Supreme Court of Appeal struck down his appeal, ruling Rule 43 interim maintenance orders cannot be challenged. He must keep paying until the divorce is final.
