NDC’s Missing Candidates in 11 States Could Hurt Its 2027 Presidential Chances

INEC’s provisional display of governorship candidates on August 29 reportedly showed that the NDC has no candidates in 11 states, including Akwa Ibom. The affected states cover 233 local government areas, representing about 30% of Nigeria’s 774 LGAs. The analysis argues that the gaps could weaken the party’s January 15, 2027 election effort. It says missing governorship and National Assembly candidates may reduce local mobilisation, ballot visibility and polling-unit agent coverage for the party’s presidential candidate. It further claims that the NDC filed candidates for roughly 70% of National Assembly seats, leaving about 141 constituencies without a party candidate. Citing provisions of the Electoral Act, the article argues that the vacancies may be difficult to fill after nomination deadlines, except through withdrawal, death or a court order.
