New Zealand Tourism Returns to 99% of Pre-Pandemic Visitor Levels
New Zealand’s international tourism sector reached 99% of its pre-pandemic level in August 2026, with 248,600 overseas visitors recorded compared with 251,100 in August 2019. The country’s tourism minister said the figures put New Zealand on track to meet its goal of restoring international visitor arrivals to 2019 levels before the end of 2026. Arrivals from Australia, Taiwan and Singapore reached record August levels, while visitors from China rose by 32% from a year earlier. Tourism is New Zealand’s second-largest export earner and supports jobs across the country. July arrivals had already exceeded their corresponding 2019 figure, marking the first monthly increase above pre-pandemic levels since travel restrictions were eased.
