Mubarak Suleiman Becomes First Nigerian Teen to Start a Champions League Match Since Iwobi
Slavia Prague midfielder Mubarak Suleiman has become the first Nigerian teenager to start a UEFA Champions League match since Alex Iwobi did so for Arsenal in 2016. The 19-year-old started in Slavia Prague’s 2-2 draw with Fenerbahçe. He played until the closing stages and contributed two key passes, as well as six accurate passes into the final third. Suleiman has registered one goal and one assist in eight appearances this season. His progress at club level could strengthen his chances of returning to the Super Eagles setup. The milestone places him alongside Nigerian players such as Iwobi, Nwankwo Kanu and Celestine Babayaro who started Champions League matches as teenagers.
