Students Faint After Tear Gas Deployed at Benin City Children’s Day Celebration
Several students collapsed during the Children’s Day events at Dr Ogbemudia Stadium in Benin City on May 27. Witnesses say a security operative fired tear gas into a crowded section after a scuffle between some male students and stadium bouncers. Panic spread as pupils scrambled for safety, leaving many with injuries. The affected students were rushed to Edo Specialist Hospital for treatment and have since returned home with their families. The Edo State Government launched an investigation and blamed overcrowding and unruly behaviour at the stadium gates. The bouncer involved is now under police interrogation. Deputy Governor Dennis Idahosa provided first aid on the spot, and the government reaffirmed its commitment to child safety. Officials have urged the public to avoid sharing unverified accounts of the incident.
