Federal Government Begins Exit-Benefit Payments for Retiring Civil Servants
The Federal Government has begun paying Additional Exit Benefits to retirees from treasury-funded Ministries, Departments and Agencies. About ₦1.1 billion has been paid to 175 civil servants who retired between January 1 and August 31, 2026. Under the Exit Benefit Scheme, eligible federal civil servants who have completed at least 10 years of service will receive an additional payment equal to 100 percent of their total annual emolument. This is separate from their regular Contributory Pension Scheme benefits. The 2026 budget allocated ₦32.9 billion for the scheme, while ₦12.3 billion has so far been released into a dedicated account at the Central Bank. Retirees must submit required documents to their Pension Fund Administrators for verification before payments are processed through their Retirement Savings Accounts and sent to their bank accounts.
