Ebonyi’s Izzi Community Celebrates Ojiji New Yam Festival as Leaders Call for Cultural Preservation

The Izzi Nnodo community gathered in Amegu, Ebonyi State, for the grand finale of the annual Ojiji Izzi New Yam Festival. The celebration marked the end of the farming season and brought together families, traditional stakeholders and public officials to honour the people’s heritage. Governor Francis Nwifuru described the festival as a symbol of peace, unity and hard work. He praised Amagu residents for preserving key ancestral values and urged young people to remain responsible and committed to productive work. Speakers at the event, including Senator Onyekachi Nwebonyi, Senator Anthony Ani and other community leaders, said culture gives people identity, shared values and a sense of belonging. They also called for stronger support for farmers and cultural institutions, noting that traditions such as communal support for newly married men help sustain families and social bonds.
