Boko Haram’s Coercive ‘Peace’ Pitch to Northern Christian Villages
I recently attended a meeting where Boko Haram leaders preached to our rural Christian community. After years of terror and killings, they claim they only serve Allah and desire peace. They set strict rules: no Nigerian government presence, no talking to security forces, no alcohol, no adultery, no education, and no “bizarre” haircuts. All legal cases must go through Boko Haram’s courts. To Christians, they insist we worship the same God and should follow their rules for safety. Yet just 20 km away they massacred over 200 parishioners, abducted 70 people, and forced conversions at gunpoint. This, I believe, is deception. Boko Haram is using peace talks to recruit followers and then enforce Islam by force. Their ultimate goal is political and economic control over a region larger than Lagos or Abuja.
