New York City Bans Generative AI Use for Pupils Up to Grade 8
New York City will temporarily ban public-school pupils from pre-kindergarten through eighth grade from using student-facing generative AI tools in the coming school year. The one-year restriction is part of a wider review of how children use AI in the United States’ largest school district. AI companion chatbots will also be prohibited for all grades. Meanwhile, high-school students will receive AI-literacy lessons twice yearly. Selected schools will test a limited number of AI platforms under teachers’ supervision. Officials say the policy aims to help students benefit from technology without becoming overly dependent on it or using it to cheat.
