Osinbajo, ECA Push African-Led Financing for Stronger Health Systems
The UN Economic Commission for Africa and former Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo are leading a new push for African countries to fund health systems more sustainably through domestic resources. The initiative builds on the Tangier Declaration adopted by African finance, planning and economic development ministers in March 2026. It urges governments to treat health spending as an investment in people, economic resilience and national security rather than simply a cost. Officials say declining foreign health aid, rising debt-service obligations and low domestic revenue are putting pressure on health budgets. They want stronger cooperation between finance and health ministries, improved tax collection, innovative financing and targeted private-sector investment. Botswana, Ethiopia, Guinea, Sierra Leone and Togo are early participants, with country-led assessments and financing plans being developed.
