UEFA Opposes Reported FIFA Plan to Sell World Cup Commercial Stakes to Investors
FIFA is reportedly considering selling up to a 30% stake in the commercial rights to the FIFA World Cup and Club World Cup to private investors. The plan would involve creating a new company to manage the tournaments’ commercial operations, while FIFA keeps majority control. Reports say investor groups, including one linked to Thrive Capital, have been briefed, while JP Morgan could serve as financial adviser. Each of FIFA’s 211 member associations could receive a stake valued at about $15 million, with the option to retain or sell it. UEFA has strongly opposed the idea, arguing that football’s governance and future should not be treated as a commercial asset. Critics fear the deal could increase pressure for bigger tournaments, more frequent competitions and host selections driven by profit. FIFA says it is consulting member associations before any final decision is made.
