FG Arraigns Ogoni Leader Over Alleged Oil Well Takeover and Terrorism Charges

FG Arraigns Ogoni Leader Over Alleged Oil Well Takeover and Terrorism Charges

The Federal Government has arraigned Chief Gani Uebari Topba, leader and spokesman of the Conscience of Ogoni People, on four counts related to alleged terrorism and cybercrime. Prosecutors allege that Topba advocated the seizure and detention of oil wells in Ogoniland between May and August 2026. They claim the action was meant to pressure the government to exclude Renaissance Africa Energy Company and its affiliates from oil-related contracts in the area. Topba also faces an allegation of publishing a video said to have threatened leaders of the KAGOTE group. He pleaded not guilty to all counts at the Federal High Court in Port Harcourt. The court adjourned the case until September 3, 2026, to consider his bail application and continue proceedings. The case comes amid ongoing efforts to reach an agreement on the possible return of oil production in Ogoniland. The allegations remain unproven, and the prosecution must establish its case in court.
