FG to Scrap JSS-SSS Separation Policy After 20 Million Pupils Drop Out

FG to Scrap JSS-SSS Separation Policy After 20 Million Pupils Drop Out

The Federal Government will scrap the policy separating junior secondary schools (JSS) from senior secondary schools (SSS) after data showed more than 20 million pupils drop out before reaching SSS. Education Minister Dr Tunji Alausa said splitting the two levels created a one-to-eight ratio of JSS to primary schools. This led to overcrowding in JSS and underutilisation of SSS facilities in states like Kaduna. The plan will be presented at the next National Council on Education meeting. He also inaugurated a committee to ensure UBEC-funded Smart, Bilingual and Alternative Schools are completed, handed over to states and opened for learners.

What alternatives could help reduce dropout rates if the FG scraps the JSS-SSS separation policy?

Absolutely, adding vocational classes alongside regular lessons could spice things up and keep students on track.

It seems odd that splitting JSS and SSS led to so many dropouts rather than improving continuity.

Perhaps the problem lies elsewhere, not the separation itself; resources and teaching quality might be the real issues.

Schools could pilot mentorship programs and community outreach to keep students engaged during the JSS to SSS transition.
