Hiroshima Atomic Bomb Survivor and Japanese Baseball Legend Isao Harimoto Dies at 86

Japanese baseball legend Isao Harimoto, a survivor of the Hiroshima atomic bombing, has died at 86 in a Tokyo hospital. Born in Hiroshima to Korean parents, Harimoto was five when the atomic bomb was dropped on the city in 1945. His mother shielded him and his sister during the blast, but his sister did not survive. Despite a childhood hand injury, Harimoto built a historic 23-season career. He remains Nippon Professional Baseball’s all-time hits leader with 3,085 hits and was the first player to reach 3,000. Known as the “Hit Machine,” he also won seven batting titles and later spoke publicly about peace and the horrors of war.
