Austin “Jay-Jay” Okocha has explained why he did not join Bayern Munich as a teenager in 1991. The former Super Eagles captain said the German club wanted to sign him after he impressed with their youth team at a tournament in Switzerland. However, German regulations meant Okocha, who turned 18 in August, could not receive a professional contract until much later in the season. Bayern offered a verbal arrangement that would have seen him train with the first team and play for the reserves. Okocha said he wanted the agreement in writing because he could not leave Nigeria without contractual security. When Bayern would not provide it, he declined the move and later joined Borussia Neunkirchen before earning a transfer to Eintracht Frankfurt.
