Defence Experts Urge Stronger Framework and Community Role in Nigeria’s Deradicalisation Programme
Defence scholars are calling for a major reform of Nigeria’s deradicalisation and reintegration efforts. They say the programme needs firmer legal safeguards, broader government ownership and active community participation to secure lasting peace. They recommend moving beyond military control by involving justice institutions, psychologists, traditional rulers and affected communities in monitoring returned ex-combatants. Experts warn that weak post-reintegration supervision, limited livelihood support and poor community acceptance threaten long-term success. A victims-first approach is also urged, balancing rehabilitation with justice through stronger vetting, sustained support for insurgency victims and conditional reintegration based on good behaviour and local acceptance. These measures, they argue, will reduce recidivism and build public confidence in initiatives like Operation Safe Corridor.
