AEDC Begins N20.33bn Refunds via 120-Month Energy Tokens

The Abuja Electricity Distribution Company has started crediting customers who funded their own prepaid meters under the Meter Asset Provider scheme after a NERC directive. The February 2026 order requires DisCos to clear a ₦20.33 billion refund backlog within 12 months. Refunds come as automated monthly energy tokens spread over 120 months and cannot offset existing debt. Many customers first mistook the bonus token SMS alerts for scams before confirming the genuine credits on their meters.
