Akwa Ibom Police Arrest Cemetery Manager, Grave Digger Over Stolen Casket
Police in Akwa Ibom have arrested the manager of Mbiokporo Cemetery in Uyo and a grave digger over the alleged exhumation of a freshly buried corpse and theft of its casket. The case was uncovered on August 3 after a resident reportedly saw two men moving a casket on an unregistered motorcycle at night. One suspect fled, while Nsikak Effiong was caught and handed to the police. Police said Effiong confessed that he and an accomplice dug up the grave, removed the corpse and took the casket to sell. Officers recovered the empty casket and motorcycle, then later arrested cemetery manager Elijah Matthew Edet, who allegedly admitted to conspiring with the grave diggers. The Commissioner of Police condemned the act and ordered a thorough investigation to identify and prosecute everyone involved.
