‘I Doesn’t’ and the Broken Mind Behind Nigeria’s Viral Policeman Video
I’ve often seen the Nigerian policeman as a tragic figure—half enforcer, half hostage. That image exploded when ASP Newton Isiokpehi threatened to shoot anyone daring to film him. We laughed at his awkward grammar, but the real horror was his desperation. Isiokpehi’s chilling rant hinted at decades of trauma. He spoke of bullets, beatings and a life steeped in violence. Yet Nigeria’s police force offers no counselling, no trauma recovery, no mental-health check-ups—just old rifles and grim orders to keep going. This systemic neglect turns officers into ticking time bombs. A law enforcement officer threatening citizens with death is a fascistic act. In Nigeria, smartphone cameras are our civic defence against brutality. We must rethink police welfare. Every command needs mental-health professionals. Trauma counselling and routine psychiatric evaluations should be as mandatory as weapons training. Otherwise, another viral grammar slip could end in a far deadlier tragedy.
