High Court Orders DSS to Apprehend Keystone Bank Employee Over ₦35M Fraud

High Court Orders DSS to Apprehend Keystone Bank Employee Over ₦35M Fraud

A Federal High Court in Lagos has declared Keystone Bank employee Mrs. Ebele Okpala wanted for allegedly defrauding the bank of ₦35 million. The order was issued ex parte on a motion by the Nigeria Police under the Administration of Criminal Justice Act 2015. The court directed the Department of State Security, Nigerian Immigration Service and Nigeria Customs Service to arrest her upon her return. The Police Special Fraud Unit will publish her name in national newspapers and on social media to enforce the order. Mrs. Okpala and a colleague, Perpetual Onyeto, were previously arraigned in September on charges including conspiracy, theft, money laundering and fraudulent removal of a lien on a customer’s account to obtain the funds.

While public accountability matters, we should avoid rushing to judgment before Mrs. Okpala has her day in court.

Banks must strengthen internal audits and regular reconciliations to reduce risk of insider fraud like this alleged ₦35 million case.
