Poultry House Ventilation: Managing Heat, Fans and Backup Power in Nigeria
Heat management and good airflow are essential for commercial poultry farms in Nigeria. Poor ventilation can cause heat stress, excess moisture and discomfort for both broilers and layers. Before installing a ventilation or cooling system, farmers should consider the poultry house design, local climate, bird type and available electricity. Open-sided houses may depend more on natural airflow, while enclosed houses often need mechanical ventilation. Exhaust fan capacity should be based on the size and requirements of the building, not only the number of birds. Cooling pads can reduce incoming air temperature, but their performance may be limited during humid weather. Larger farms can use sensors and automatic controllers, but the equipment must suit actual farm conditions. Farms that depend on fans should also have reliable backup power and an emergency plan for outages. My main point is that more fans or cooling pads do not automatically mean better ventilation. How do poultry farmers in different parts of Nigeria manage heat, airflow, electricity and equipment maintenance?
