Senate Questions Abaribe’s Defection to ADC Under Section 68(1)
The Senate on Thursday opened a constitutional debate over Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe’s seat after APGA claimed to have sacked him and he joined the African Democratic Congress. Senate President Godswill Akpabio ordered a review of defection letters under Section 68(1)(b) of the 1999 Constitution to see if Abaribe met the requirements. Deputy Senate President Jibrin Barau and other senators noted there was no internal crisis in APGA to justify a switch. Adams Oshiomhole argued that Abaribe’s claimed expulsion did not fall under the division clause and urged the chamber to invoke constitutional sanctions if no genuine ground emerged. Abaribe insisted his defection was valid because he was expelled, not because of party division. The Senate gave him one week to produce proof of his removal or face vacating his seat. The chamber may refer the matter to its legal department or the courts if Abaribe does not withdraw his letter.
