Why Lagos’s Glittering Skyline Hides a City in Crisis
Lagos generates more revenue than any other Nigerian state. Yet millions of its residents still battle open sewers, chronic flooding and crumbling roads. Despite record Internally Generated Revenue and huge federal allocations, much of the borrowed money has boosted luxury developments on Victoria Island and Eko Atlantic. Meanwhile, everyday commuters endure gridlocked traffic and an underperforming bus system. Communities in Mushin, Ajegunle and Makoko lack basic drainage, clean water and reliable transport. The city’s rapid growth—adding hundreds of thousands each year—has outpaced any effort to expand housing or services. Development is more than a skyline. Until Lagos invests in roads that don’t flood and efficient transit for all, its wealth will remain a missed opportunity rather than a success story.
