Floods and Mudslides Displace 347 Residents in Cross River
Torrential rainfall and a mudslide displaced 347 people in parts of Cross River in August, according to the State Emergency Management Agency. The agency said 167 people lost their homes after a mudslide in Calabar, while about 180 others were displaced by rainfall in the Central Senatorial District. Affected residents are being sheltered in locations across Calabar and the central district, including facilities supported by the Nigerian Red Cross. The agency blamed a combination of natural factors and human activities for the disasters. Residents were urged to avoid indiscriminate waste disposal, maintain safe electrical wiring and switch off unused appliances to reduce flooding and fire risks. Officials said local emergency committees lead the first response, with cases escalated to the state and national agencies when necessary. Relief materials and financial support are being provided as authorities work to help victims return home or find alternative accommodation.
