Congolese Man Found Guilty of Murdering Nigerian Student in Norwich
A Congolese man has been convicted of murdering a 33-year-old Nigerian student in communal housing in Norwich last November. Uchenna Okirie, an economics graduate of the University of East Anglia, was stabbed and left face down in a corridor at Somerleyton House. After the attack, 28-year-old Benjamin Katabana handed himself in to police, admitting “I have killed someone.” While he pleaded guilty to manslaughter with diminished responsibility, a jury at Norwich Crown Court convicted him of murder. CCTV footage showed Katabana luring Mr Okirie to the corridor before launching a sustained knife attack. The defence cited his traumatic upbringing in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, but the court found the assault unprovoked. No sentencing date has been set. Investigators hope the verdict brings some justice to the victim’s family.
