Awujale Succession: Fusengbuwa Ruling House Takes Ogun Government, Kingmakers to Court

The Fusengbuwa Ruling House of Ijebu-Ode has taken the Ogun State Government and nine Awujale kingmakers to court over the stalled process to select a new Awujale of Ijebuland. The plaintiffs want the Ogun State High Court to order the kingmakers to reconvene and choose a candidate from the 95 princes and princesses nominated by the ruling house in January 2026. They also seek to stop further government and security-agency interference in the process. The ruling house argues that its nomination was completed in line with the Ogun State Obas and Chiefs’ Law. It alleges that police officers disrupted the kingmakers’ meeting after the nominee list was submitted, while the state government later suspended the process over security and bribery allegations. The Awujale stool has been vacant since the death of Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona in July 2025. The defendants have not publicly responded to the suit, which is yet to be heard.
