Merit or Connections? Why Nigerians Question Government Recruitment
For many Nigerians, applying for a government job feels like more than a test of qualifications. Thousands may apply for a few openings, yet unsuccessful candidates are often left without clear reasons for their outcome. Formal recruitment can involve examinations, interviews, credential checks, experience, age limits and available vacancies. However, persistent concerns about favouritism, political influence and nepotism make it difficult for applicants to trust the process. Transparency is key. Agencies should clearly state the number of vacancies, eligibility criteria, shortlisting method, scoring process and basis for final selections. Fair representation across Nigeria matters, but it should not weaken competence or accountability. A credible public recruitment system should give qualified candidates a fair chance and help unsuccessful applicants understand why they were not selected. Without that trust, government jobs will continue to be seen as opportunities reserved for people with connections.
