From DVDs to Streaming: How Nollywood Is Rethinking Film Releases
Nollywood has moved far beyond its early home-video model of fast production, DVD sales and market distribution. The expansion of cinemas in major Nigerian cities has made theatrical releases more realistic for filmmakers, while also raising expectations for picture quality, sound and storytelling. Film marketing has changed too. Producers now build anticipation with trailers, cast interviews, premiere events, behind-the-scenes clips and social-media campaigns. Release dates are planned around festive seasons, competing blockbusters and cinema-going patterns to give films a stronger chance at the box office. Streaming has added another route to audiences. Many films now combine a cinema run with later availability on streaming platforms, helping producers reach viewers across Nigeria and the diaspora. This shift is pushing Nollywood toward better planning, stronger production values and more deliberate distribution strategies.
