The Trans-Saharan Slave Trade and Africa’s Overlooked History
The trans-Saharan, Red Sea and Indian Ocean slave trades moved millions of Africans over several centuries. Historical estimates vary, but UNESCO and other researchers have documented their scale and lasting impact. The discussion should not erase the Atlantic slave trade. It should also examine the roles played by African rulers, traders and external powers across different periods. Modern trafficking and forced labour remain serious human-rights abuses in parts of Africa and the Middle East. They should be discussed with verified evidence and without blaming entire religious or ethnic communities.
