Nigeria Steps Up Ebola Surveillance After Imported Case; Uganda Tightens Airport Screening
Nigeria has heightened Ebola surveillance after health authorities confirmed an imported case involving a woman who arrived in Abuja following travel through Uganda and eastern Democratic Republic of Congo. The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention said laboratory testing confirmed the case. Contact tracing, surveillance and other measures have been intensified to prevent further transmission. Uganda has also strengthened screening at Entebbe International Airport after the woman reportedly transited through the country earlier in October. Uganda’s health ministry said she showed no symptoms while there and that the country has no confirmed active Ebola cases. Ebola spreads through direct contact with the bodily fluids of a person showing symptoms or contaminated materials. Early detection, isolation and contact tracing were central to Nigeria’s successful containment of its 2014 outbreak.
