How Islamic Terrorism Undermines Development and Peace in West and Central Africa
Islamic extremist groups continue to destabilize key regions in Mali, Nigeria and Sudan. Recent attacks in northern Mali by Al-Qaeda and ISIS affiliates have displaced communities and even toppled a junta minister. In West Africa’s Sahel states, porous borders allow militants to strike military bases and villages across Nigeria’s North East, North West and North Central zones. These incursions fuel fear and hinder local development. Similar patterns of violence have emerged in Sudan’s ethnic conflicts and in Nigeria’s Middle Belt, where armed militias have driven indigenous communities from their lands. This cycle of killings and land grabs has deep roots in extremist ideologies. Although Islam preaches peace, the actions of some armed groups have torn apart long-standing coexistence. Understanding this challenge is crucial to restoring security and rebuilding affected communities.
