Parents Asked to Sign Waiver Allowing Registered Sex Offender to Coach Their Children
A youth sports programme in Texas is facing intense backlash after parents learned that a former coach tied to the organisation is a registered sex offender. Thomas Whiteman, 46, served as head coach of the THESA Riders and remains on the state’s offender registry until 2030 for online solicitation of a minor in 2010. Details suggest the case involved explicit communication with someone believed to be 14 years old. Parents say the waiver they received during registration framed Whiteman’s past as a personal and religious transformation but did not disclose his criminal record. The issue was first exposed by a watchdog group. Whiteman has since been removed from the coaching roster. The Carroll Independent School District says it is reviewing concerns after a student briefly took part in the programme at a parent’s request. The sports association has not yet issued a public statement.
