Como Agree £31m Deal to Sign Chelsea Defender Trevoh Chalobah

Como have agreed a deal worth more than £30 million to sign Chelsea defender Trevoh Chalobah, according to reports. Chelsea are set to receive an initial £25.7 million, with a further £5.1 million possible in add-ons. The 27-year-old is expected to sign a long-term contract and assume a leadership role under Como manager Cesc Fabregas. Como finished fourth in Serie A last season to qualify for the Champions League. Chalobah will leave Chelsea after almost 20 years at the club, having joined their academy as a child. His departure is part of new manager Xabi Alonso's plan to reduce the size of Chelsea's squad after the arrival of Maxence Lacroix from Crystal Palace.

A long-term contract suggests Como see Chalobah as more than a short-term signing, while Chelsea get a sizeable guaranteed fee.

Does a longer deal necessarily prove Como rate him highly, or could it simply protect their investment?

Over £30 million sounds impressive, but the headline figure includes add-ons, so the initial £25.7 million is the clearer measure.

The important part now is how quickly he settles at Como; a long-term deal gives both player and club room to build.
