I Thought My Period Was Irregular Until I Was Diagnosed With PCOS
I started menstruating at 13, after years of feeling left behind by my peers. But my periods soon became unpredictable. They would disappear for months, then return with severe cramps and extremely heavy bleeding. In 2020, the bleeding lasted for months and left me exhausted and anaemic. I struggled to afford sanitary pads and eventually sought medical care at University College Hospital, Ibadan. Years later, in June 2025, I was diagnosed with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), a hormonal condition that can affect periods, skin, weight and fertility. The diagnosis brought as many questions as answers. I still deal with painful bleeding, acne, nausea, headaches and uncertainty about my health. I am learning to seek reliable medical advice, understand my symptoms and live more gently with a body that often feels unfamiliar.
