Anambra AG: Soludo Remitted Akwa Ọkụkọ’s Sentence, Did Not Grant Pardon
Anambra State Attorney-General Tobechukwu Nweke said Governor Chukwuma Soludo did not pardon Chidozie Nwangwu, popularly known as Akwa Ọkụkọ Tiwara Akị. He said the governor remitted the unserved part of Nwangwu’s prison sentence under the constitutional prerogative of mercy. Nweke said the decision followed consultations with the State Advisory Committee on Prerogative of Mercy. He cited Nwangwu’s guilty plea, remorse and the short period left on his sentence as factors considered in his release. The Attorney-General said the plea-bargain arrangement was separate from the remission but helped bring the case to a conclusion. He added that Anambra is expanding plea bargaining to reduce court delays and congestion in correctional centres, with about 170 applications currently under review. He also said the Ministry of Justice is reviewing criminal cases linked to land disputes, so matters found to be civil in nature can be removed from criminal courts.
