Minnesota Assassin to Be Sentenced for Killing State Speaker and Husband
A Minnesota man who admitted to stalking and fatally shooting House Speaker Melissa Hortman and her husband Mark is scheduled for federal sentencing. Vance Boelter, 59, pleaded guilty to six counts in June to avoid the death penalty and faces two consecutive life terms plus 40 years. Court records show Boelter spent months tracking his targets before disguising himself as a police officer and launching midnight attacks. He first critically wounded state Senator John Hoffman and his wife before moving on to the Hortmans’ home. He shot Mark multiple times, forced his way inside, and killed Speaker Hortman as she tried to flee. Their dog was also killed in the assault. Prosecutors described the attack as an assault on democracy that terrorized Minnesota’s public servants. Ahead of sentencing, Boelter’s defense asked for placement in a Florida prison where he can work to pay restitution and participate in rehabilitation programs.
