After Oyo School Kidnapping, Media Group Demands State and Community Policing
More than two weeks after schoolchildren and teachers were abducted in Oyo State, Journalists for Good Governance is calling on all levels of government to prioritise rescue efforts and put lives above politics. They warn that delays and partisan debates risk repeating past tragedies. Highlighting the reported beheading of a teacher and recent attacks in remote communities—such as the mass abduction in Kaba-Bunu, Kogi State—the group says Nigeria’s current security architecture is failing rural areas. They urge the National Assembly and state legislatures to pass bills establishing state police forces and empowering community security teams. Referencing the 2014 Chibok abduction, the statement cautions against politicising national tragedies. Leaders, it says, must unite across party lines to secure the safe return of all captives and restore public confidence in Nigeria’s ability to protect its children.
