Why People Suddenly Collapse in Public and What to Do First
A sudden collapse can happen when the brain does not receive enough blood or oxygen. Possible causes include cardiac arrest, stroke, dangerously low blood sugar, severe dehydration, overheating, fainting, and undiagnosed heart conditions. Low blood sugar may occur after skipping meals, intense exercise without adequate food, or drinking alcohol on an empty stomach. However, do not give food, drinks, or medication to anyone who is unconscious or unable to swallow, as they could choke. If someone collapses, call for emergency help immediately. Check whether they are responsive and breathing. If they are not breathing normally, begin CPR only if you are trained, and continue until help arrives. Do not ignore warning signs such as chest pain, severe dizziness, unusual sweating, fast heartbeat, weakness, or extreme fatigue. Regular blood pressure, blood sugar, and general health checks can help identify risks early.
