Bible Study Questions: The Sacrifice of Saul’s Grandsons in 2 Samuel 21

I invite Bible scholars to analyze 2 Samuel 21, where a three-year famine strikes Israel because of Saul’s bloodguilt. To make atonement, David hands over seven of Saul’s grandsons to the Gibeonites, who hang them before the LORD. Afterwards, they bury Saul’s and Jonathan’s bones and rain finally returns. My questions: 1) Why were these grandsons given up for sacrifice? 2) To whom were they handed and why? 3) Who withheld the rain and who released it after the atonement?
