I attended an expensive private secondary school in Ibadan after leaving a public school. My parents, who were middle-level civil servants, made major sacrifices to pay my fees. There, I met a quiet, neat and confident classmate who stood out for her intelligence, poise and warm personality. She came from a comfortable Lagos-based family and was admired by many boys in our 2004 set. Rumours about wealthy suitors followed her, but she remained private and focused on her education. After school, we heard that she built a successful career, moved abroad and continued to live independently. More than two decades later, she is still unmarried. Her story raises a wider question: why do some attractive and accomplished women remain single despite appearing to have many options? Assumptions about high standards, competition, independence and marriage expectations may discourage potential partners. Still, being unmarried does not automatically mean someone is unhappy or incomplete.
