Nafiu Isyaku Rabiu: The Kano Businessman Behind a Landmark Criminal Case

Nafiu Isyaku Rabiu was the eldest son of Sheikh Isyaku Rabiu and the elder brother of BUA Group founder Abdul Samad Rabiu. In 1970s Kano, he was known as a wealthy businessman whose lifestyle reflected the influence of one of Northern Nigeria’s most prominent commercial families. His life changed after the 1979 death of his wife, Fatima, at their Kano home. He was charged with culpable homicide, initially acquitted by the High Court, then convicted by the Court of Appeal. In November 1980, the Supreme Court upheld the conviction and a four-year prison sentence. The case became a landmark in Nigerian criminal law and remained widely remembered in Kano as “Kotun Nafiu.” His imprisonment also coincided with a shift in the Rabiu family’s business leadership, as his younger brother Abdul Samad later emerged as a leading industrialist. Nafiu Rabiu’s story remains a notable chapter in Kano’s social history, Nigerian legal history and the history of the Rabiu business family.
