Diphtheria Outbreak in Jos North Leaves 15 Dead, 117 Suspected Cases Reported

At least 15 people have died in a diphtheria outbreak affecting several communities in Jos North Local Government Area of Plateau State. Health officials say 117 suspected cases have been recorded so far, with the number expected to rise. The council’s disease surveillance officer said diphtheria spreads through close contact and shared household items such as utensils and towels. Children who are unvaccinated or have not completed their vaccine doses face a higher risk of severe illness and death. Residents have been urged to avoid self-medication, maintain good hygiene and seek immediate care at the nearest health facility if they develop symptoms or believe they have been exposed. Health personnel have been deployed to affected communities for awareness and early-detection efforts.
