Fake Job Offers Lured Nigerians into Sex Slavery in Côte d’Ivoire

Several Nigerian women deceived by promises of lucrative work at home and abroad were trafficked to Côte d’Ivoire and forced into commercial sex slavery. Among them are a 17-year-old from Benue and others aged 18 to 38. Traffickers locked them up, monitored their calls, and forced them to serve up to 15 men a day. The victims were freed in a joint operation by the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons, Ivorian authorities, and the Global Anti-Human Trafficking Organisation. Some escaped with the help of sympathetic locals, while others were rescued after months of abuse. Advocates warn that economic hardship and unemployment make many young Nigerians vulnerable to such schemes. They urge would-be migrants to verify job offers through official channels and report suspicious recruiters to law enforcement before traveling.
