Anambra Pensioners Demand Payment of 11-Month Arrears Approved in 2014

The Nigeria Union of Pensioners in Anambra says some retired primary school teachers are still owed 11 months of pension arrears approved during Peter Obi’s administration in 2014. At a press conference in Awka, the union said five of the 16 inherited months were paid before Obi left office. It alleged that the remaining balance was not settled under Willie Obiano and has remained outstanding under Governor Chukwuma Soludo. The pensioners acknowledged Soludo’s payment of ₦22 billion in inherited gratuity arrears and the ₦10,000 monthly pension award. However, they argued that the payment does not amount to the constitutionally required harmonisation of pensions. They also called for outstanding benefits for ABS retirees and other verified pension entitlements to be paid.
