UCH Ibadan’s New Cath Lab Challenges Claims of Benin’s Health-Care Lead
Nigeria recently commissioned a specialised radio-diagnosis unit and cardiac catheterisation laboratory at the University College Hospital, Ibadan. The facility is part of a wider package of health projects, including advanced diagnostic and cancer centres, intended to expand specialist care and reduce medical tourism. A recent social-media claim described Benin Republic’s International Hospital Centre of Calavi as West Africa’s largest and most advanced teaching hospital. Calavi is a major achievement, with about 434 beds and roughly 48,000 square metres of space. However, UCH has about 1,445 beds and occupies close to 300,000 square metres, making it substantially larger by both measures. UCH also has a long record in medical training and specialist services, including open-heart surgery, nuclear medicine, palliative care and geriatric services. Nigeria’s health sector still faces serious challenges, but comparisons with neighbouring countries should be based on verified records rather than viral superlatives.
